Experimenting with anti-gravity can yield interesting results. Here, a time-travel machine deposits two friends, Peter Shock and Katie Dyer, squarely in the midst of all the splendor and horror of 18th century England.

Linda Buckley-Archer's attention to the historical detail of London and surrounding countryside in 1763 makes it virtually impossible to not learn a fact or two about merry old England. Of particular interest are the young travelers' chance meetings with Charles Darwin's elegant grandfather, a young King George and the witty Samuel Johnson.

While the story's adventure will have listeners scurrying back and forth between centuries, Gideon the Cutpurse is also is a tale of family and friendship. Peter, an only child of highly successful working parents, misperceives their lack of time with him as tantamount to loving him less. Kate's family is a large one, living on a farm outside of London. Her dad, a scientist, is involved in one of the greatest scientific experiments of the day.

Buckley-Archer weaves an elaborate tale that makes this 10 CD audio book move quite quickly. And, Gerard Doyle's marvelous voice captures beautifully 18th-centry lords, parson, criminals, as well as the charming 21st century children. Told like tales that used to be passed down from generation to generation, Gideon the Cutpurse is a book you want to read in audiobook form.
