Review:
During the bitter cold of Christmas Eve, 1914, British and German soldiers in the muddy trenches of the Western Front, spontaneously stopped fighting. This brief and unofficial ceasefire of World War I came to be known as the Christmas Truce.

Using the device of a grandfather telling his two grandchildren about living through the experience, author John McCutcheon reveals the touching story in a fictionalized account of the real event in which as many as 100,000 soldiers sang Christmas carols —first in German and then in English—across the battleground of No Man's Land. The men came up out of their opposing trenches and visited for hours. They exchanged small gifts; they even played ball.

Although the Christmas Truce event is almost 100 years old, the lessons about the strength of humanity and the power of kindness are timeless.
