Review:
“Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, / I made it out of clay; / Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, / Then dreidel I shall play.” These words make up the catchy refrain in this Hannukah song- turned-picture book by Maxie Baum. Here, we follow the holiday preparations of a Jewish family as they all pitch in to make latkes (potato pancakes), light special holiday candles on the Menorah, and, of course, play the dreidel game. Baum's simple rhyming text is lively, making it a natural for reading aloud. She also includes several items for curious young readers: the Dreidel Song, a recipe for potato latkes, and directions on how to play Dreidel. Julie Paschkis provides lovely illustrations that capture the celebratory nature of the season. The colors are striking, and contrast nicely with the blue and white Hannukah colors in the border. This is a fun book to share with all children at home or in the classroom.
