Review:
I Spy Spooky Mansion builds on the trademark I Spy hidden picture concept with interactive riddles, animated solutions, and a simple story line to compel the player through the game. Here, players search for items hidden within screen displays of rooms or pictures in a haunted house. Players click to enter a haunted house, then click into rooms of the house to find pieces of a puzzle which will provide them with the means to exit the house. To find the puzzle pieces, players must search through busy photographs of the rooms and pictures in the house to find the items mentioned in the riddles associated with each screen. As each scavenger hunt is completed, the player is rewarded with a piece to a final puzzle. The puzzle leads to one final round of searching, which allows the player to “escape” from the haunted house. The game requires attention to detail and occasionally creative thinking (e.g., a clue of “eight” could mean the digit 8, the word “eight”, eight dots on a pair of dice, etc.). With challenges for children of all ages, this game is compelling even to adults. Although some testers reported difficulty in being able to discern images on the TV screen, all agreed that this is one of the more successful DVD games reviewed to date.
