Review:
The story my parents enjoyed as children is still entertaining my 21st century kids and their friends, even though Virginia Lee Burton's 1939 illustrations aren't the latest in 3-D computer animation, and buildings are no longer heated by coal or steam. Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, a story of changing times and adaptive re-use, leads off this collection about big vehicles. Kate and Jim McMullan's 2002 picture book I Stink (a first-person narrative by a gritty trash truck), paired with Andrea Zimmerman and David Clemesha's 1999 Trashy Town (a colorful story with a cool score, featuring garbage truck driver Mr. Gilly) show how important refuse collection is. Dot the Fire Dog (2001) by Lisa Desimini tells the story of fire hall life through the eyes of Dot the Dalmatian, and presents fire safety rules at the end of the story. The bonus story is the 1982 live-action film The Remarkable Riderless Runaway Tricycle based on Bruce McMillan's book. While the film looks dated, my boys love it anyway. It's comforting to know that no matter how technology changes our world, a good story can remain entertaining to generations of readers—and now, viewers.
