Review:
The World of Germs is a collection of plastic scientific instruments–petri dishes, funnels, eye dropper, test tubes–a book of experiments for young children to try at home, all packaged in a brightly colored, trivia laden cardboard box. The booklet is fun to look at, full of graphics, dialog bubbles, and easy-to follow picture instructions. Each page has a different child–a cartoon drawing–presenting experiments that include how bacteria spreads, how fungi grow, why water boils, and the role of yeast. Although the box indicates the experiments can be accomplished by children as young as five, some of our younger testers found the gratification period was often too long. By the time one needs to wait to see the results the kids have moved on to something else. “What would happen if I hid a moist sandwich under my bed?” for instance, requires the child to check daily up to a week to see if mold is growing on some bread. Other experiments need several days to come to fruition. Yes, patience is required to conduct a scientific experiment, but the five year olds wanted the results of the fun science experiments NOW.
