Review:
Mary Casanova's new picture book, Some Dog!, may be about a basset hound, but parents will immediately recognize it as a tale of sibling rivalry. George lives a contented life as a couple's only dog; when they fish, he nestles in the middle of the boat, when they read the paper, he has "a place to rest his weary head," and so on. But everything changes when a scrappy little stray with energy to burn is taken in by George's owners. Zippity quickly steals the spotlight with his tricks, which include back-flips and swimming; worse still, he steals George's spot in the dog bed. The older dog naturally feels displaced, resentful and sad - not unlike, say, a preschooler with a new baby in the house. Casanova captures the mixed-up feelings of someone in George's position, and young children will likely empathize with him. Ard Hoyt's drawings bring each of the dogs to life with a humorous touch, exaggerating George's powerful nose and Zippity's wild eyes. A sweet little book for dog-lovers and new big brother/sisters.
