Review:
Author Kirby Larson's Newbery Honor Book, read by actor Kirsten Potter, capturing every nuance in a pitch-perfect performance, is about an orphaned 16-year-old girl's hard-scrabble efforts to find her own place in the world by working her late uncle's homestead claim in Montana. With warmth and a keen eye for time and place, Larson sets Hattie's adventures against the patriotic fever of World War I, when anyone with a German name is suddenly suspect, even Hattie's good-hearted neighbors. As Hattie finds an outlet in letters to her soldier school "chum" and in diary-like pieces for a small newspaper, each challenge teaches her more about who she is. And, at the end of her journey of self-discovery, Hattie has learned just what "home" is-and isn't-too.
