Review:
Being a worm kid is a little bit different from being a human child. When it comes to doing the Hokey Pokey, "You put your head in, you put your head out....That's all we could do," worm writes in his journal. But like many human children, the little worm is taught that he has a big responsibility to help take care of the Earth. Good animation from the book by Doreen Cronin and a cool jazz background makes this tale a charmer. Anatole, Eve Titus' French mouse from 1956, is so old he's new again-the dated artwork is now "mid-century retro." Frog Goes to Dinner is a live-action adaptation of Mercer Mayer's 1974 book, and Jules Feiffer's I Lost My Bear (with original illustrations) is the story of the horrible moment when a girl discovers her favorite teddy is missing. The wittiest story in the collection is Margaret Mahy's "The Three-Legged Cat," which was unfortunately relegated to the bonus materials and may be overlooked by some viewers. Frog Goes to Dinner is a live action short. I was disappointed that the illustrations from the Mayer book weren't used. The story seems somehow more dated in live action. (the family goes to and from the restaurant in an AMC Gremlin!)
