Children with divorced parents often have multiple households. It’s easy enough to keep clothes, toys, books and beds in each parent’s home, but what happens when there’s a pet involved? For the young girl at the center of Nancy Coffelt’s new picture book, the answer is consistency--Fred, her beloved dog, stays with her. At first the arrangement works well for Mom, Dad, the girl and Fred. But eventually Fred’s canine ways--eating socks, tracking in mud--drive both parents crazy. If they don’t come up with a solution fast, Fred won’t be welcome in either house. Coffelt’s story is written in easy-to-read language, and, happily, depicts a divorced family that’s still perfectly functional. Tricia Tusa’s illustrations are rendered in warm sepia tones, giving the book a timeless quality. This is a nice choice for pet-loving families, divorced or not, to share.
