Review:Dolores is her school’s resident cat expert, thanks to her beloved fat-cat, Duncan. Every show-and-tell, Dolores relates Duncan’s latest greatest feats - saving her from a waterbug, keeping her feet warm at night, and even eating yucky food so Dolores won’t have to. All is well in Dolores’s feline-centered world, until a new girl joins the class. Hillary quickly establishes herself as the new go-to on cat matters, and suddenly everyone wants to hear about her amazing pedigreed Siamese, Harold. To make matters worse, the school is planning a special Pet Day show. Despite advice to just "let Duncan be Duncan," Dolores is upset - how can Duncan compete with a cat who "had seven different ways of saying meow"? Author-illustrator Barbara Samuels accurately captures a child’s feelings of rivalry, and also sees the inherent humor in the situation. Her vivid illustrations are full of personality, especially where the animals are concerned. This is a fun book to share with young cat-lovers, or any child who’s feeling a bit of competition.
