Review:
Imagine Hairy isn’t just the title of Kate Klise’s sweet picture book; it’s also a play-on-words that hints at the heart of the story. Little Rabbit has other friends, but none of them are like Harry. Harry is that special buddy that Rabbit can always count on to be by his side during difficult times, like the first day of school or bath day. He’s also the perfect companion for playing in the snow or rolling down a soft green hill. The only catch - no one else can see him. Mother Rabbit kindly indulges her child’s imaginary friend, but she also sets boundaries - Harry can go along to school, for example, but he needs to share Little Rabbit’s desk and can’t make any noise. Young readers will likely identify with Rabbit’s connection to Harry, and parents certainly will see the gentle humor in the situation. M. Sarah Klise’s acrylic illustrations are bathed in cozy colors that work well with the text. This is a nice story of one young child’s attachment to, and gradual release of, a very special friend.
