Review:
Not the most diligent of his uncle's employees, Carlo dawdles in the marketplace of Magenta. Browsing in an open-air bookstall, he is surprised and delighted when the bookseller gives him an ancient book full of wonderful stories of genies in bottles and carpets that fly. And tucked between the pages of the stories is an ancient treasure map.

Carlo tries to return the map, but he cannot find the bookseller anywhere; it's as though he never existed. Returning home, Carlo is cast out by his uncle who is infuriated with Carlo for terrible his bookkeeping errors. He leaves Magenta aboard a ship bound for Marakand, the gateway to the "Road of Golden Dreams" and the beginning of his quest for the map's treasure. In Marakand, he collects two unusual companions, Baksheesh, a rascal of a camel-puller, and Rabbit, a beautiful girl disguised as a boy.

In Alexander's adventurous travelogue, the characters encounter terrible dangers and villains - escaping from one only to encounter another. Full of the author's ironic, understated humor, these colorful characters grow and learn from their experiences. A book brimming with laughter, tender love and the wisdom of an old man.
