Review:
Kids and parents who like the gentle teachings and cleverly crafted songs of Bear in the Big Blue House will find the wilds of this rainforest jungle a similarly welcome retreat. Show creator Mitchell Kriegman uses the same bunraku-style puppetry and computer-generated animation to bring to life Snook, a pale-throated three-toed sloth, who learns, laughs and sings with his animal friends. This DVD, "You Can Do It" is a hefty collection of half-hour episodes centered on the theme of learning to use your abilities. Whether it's Smooch and Winslow learning to use their five senses to help Bob discover the source of a scary noise, or realizing that flying is special ability for some animals, the lessons are simple and entertainingly told. The original songs are particularly well crafted, reinforcing ideas such as using common sense to overcome fears. The Did You Know Facts are noteworthy and relevant to the plot. Although each episode is different, the show follows a formula of song, story, song, story song, which, while repetitious, is more reassuring than annoying. Taken in one sitting, the DVD is far too much and should be watched in episodic increments.
