Review:
Rose is the youngest child of the unconventional Casson family. Her oldest sister, Caddy, is living in hiding, making occasional, mysterious phone calls to the family, never telling them where she is. Saffy, another older sister, and Indigo, her older brother, are constantly busy. Her father is a pretentious painter who moved to London. Her more talented and unpretentious mother paints in a shed behind the house. All the family members love Rose, but she definitely suffers from benign neglect - until she and her friend Molly concoct a preposterous plan to sneak away from a field trip to spend the night in the zoo. Suddenly, everyone is paying attention to Rose.

With a light, comic touch, the author explores intricate relationships of parents, siblings, and friends in this thoroughly endearing, screwball of a family. She manages to tie the various, very loose aspects of eccentricity into a kindly, thoroughly satisfying whole.
