Rube Goldberg may have departed this world in 1970, but his doppelganger lives on in Arthur Geisert. Here-stretched out to picture book length-are all the complexities (in service of simple tasks) that Goldberg made famous in cartoon format. And Geisert is definitely his worthy successor. In this romp, a group of piggies clothed in reds, yellows, blues and whites, leave what appears to be a school and trundle off to a desert-ish landscape where they proceed to construct the world's biggest mud puddle. Mud not being enough of a mess, however, they add vats of multi-colored paint. What's a mother pig to do? March those little porkers, at broom's-length, off to an even more complicated wash-a-rama replete with wheels, pincers, bellows, magnets, windmills, steams pipes and more. The image of dozens of little pink noses in a tilt-a-whirl tub is enough to make even the tidiest reader long to get down and messy...not to mention the penultimate scene of long lines of piggies hung up in the sunshine to dry. Fabulous muddy sudsy fun!
