Alice McGill's background as a storyteller informs the cadences and rhythms of this tale handed down through her family from her "great-grandmama's mama" to present day. It is a not-unfamiliar vision: slaves brought to this country in chains and forced to labor in the fields escape their bondage and fly away to freedom. The specificity of the language, however, brings the image into razor-sharp focus. "(She) dropped hands and stepped up on the air-like she was climbing a ladder. Then she moved her arms like wings and her feet like tail feathers, and she flew!" Daly's faux folk style illustrations with their simple shapes, bright colors set against almost monochromatic backgrounds, and naïve perspectives suit both the historical and emblematic nature of this off-told but ever-important story.
