The main characters in this book are all "wounded birds." Aggie owns the small aging, "Sleepy Time Motel" in the Great Smokey Mountains. Her beloved husband, Horace, died suddenly, and Aggie has let the motel deteriorate. Shortly after Willow's mother Dorothy left her and her father, Mr. Dover decides to buy the motel, sight unseen, and hauls Willow away from the home and cherished memories of her mother. As Kirby's angry mother is driving him to a school for troubled boys, their car breaks down. They settle into a room at the Sleepy Time Motel and wait for Kirby's hostile stepfather to send money to fix the car. Loretta's loving adoptive parents are taking her on a tour inspired by a charm bracelet she has just inherited from her birth mother.

O'Connor clearly knows her setting and has an ear for easy colloquial speech. As she paints the foibles of her colorful characters with a kind brush, she brings them believably to life in this gently humorous story of lost and found.
