Review:
Like most young children, Otto can do lots of things pretty well, such as making sand castles or being kind to others. Again, like most children, there are also a few things that require more effort. Otto, despite his otter nature, just can't get the hang of swimming. He's impatient and frustrated that he hasn't mastered this skill. But, with a bit of guidance, he learns that sometimes you have to take challenges "little by little," starting small and working at your own pace. Amber Stewart's new book provides gentle encouragement for children struggling with any task, be it swimming, tying shoes, writing or coloring neatly. Preschoolers especially will sympathize with Otto's predicament and will cheer him on as he succeeds bit by bit. The illustrations by Layn Marlow are fresh and full of innocence, rendered in sunlit shades of green, blue, yellow and brown. The large print and brief text also make this a good choice for beginning readers. This upbeat little book is worthy of a place on any preschool shelf.
