Review:
Fascinated by one of the last horse cultures on earth, Betsy and Ted Lewin wanted to chronicle the Mongolian summer horse-racing festival called the Naadam. They traveled for three days from Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, in a minivan over bumpy roadless steppes to reach the gers, (felt tents) the home to a camp of horse trainers. Their story tells of nine-year old Tamir, who is to race his special stallion, and of the young riders who must walk their horses behind a jeep until they reach the starting line fourteen miles away where a man holds a red flag.

The fine-line, realistic, watercolor illustrations in bright colors, frequently across double- page spreads, capture the essence of a people, their homes, the pandemonium of this special horse race, and the dust that envelops all.
