Part of Chris Fesko's "On the Farm" series, this live action DVD shows explicit footage of all kinds of farm births, from the hatching of butterflies and bluebirds to the live deliveries of mammals including sheep, cows, and horses. (Fesko says she slept in the barn for a week, waiting to film the mare's delivery!) Hopelessly enchanting footage of chicks, lambs, puppies, kittens, piglets, calves, colts, even a doe deer and fawn at play give this production cross-generational appeal. Although my seven-year old freaked at the sight of some blood on the colt's birth sac (full disclosure: he faints at the sight of blood in real life), he came back in once the delivery was over. The real-time (translate: s-l-o-w) delivery of a calf lost our four-year old's interest, but he resumed watching once the cow started getting the calf cleaned up and "looking like a cow." Educational (I never knew a female bluebird ate her chicks' shells to replenish her calcium levels) as well as entertaining, this title is warmly recommended.
