Review:
It's hard to find much fault with any of the Bob the Builder shows. They're fun, colorful, informative, educational and, for the most part, entertaining. In his latest DVD, "On Site: Houses & Playgrounds," Bob provides a typically cheerful overview of what it takes to build the house we live in and the playground (and skate park) we visit for an afternoon of fun. Typical of other Bob the Builder DVDs, Houses & Playgrounds cuts from animated sequences featuring Bob and his "Can-Do Crew" of machines to live-action footage that provides a real-world sense of what Bob is talking about, including a cute segment in which a group of kids erects a doghouse. About the only quibble here is that "Houses and Playgrounds" runs a tad too long. Even for the most enthusiastic contractor-to-be, an hour of talk and musical interludes about foundations, laying a surface, demolition, cement mixers and varnish may be too much of a good thing. It's probably best that younger kids watch the house section in one sitting and then the playgrounds section in another.
