Bedtime routines vary among households, but one constant is the sense of comfort and stability that comes with some nightly version of pajamas-toothbrush-story-snuggle. The House in the Night, a gentle new picture book by Susan Marie Swanson, would fit into any child's bedtime reading in part because the story itself honors repetition. Her text is in the tradition of classics such as The House that Jack Built, opening with the lines: "Here is the key to the house. In the house burns a light. In that light rests a bed. On that bed waits a book." From there, readers enter a scene in the waiting book--following sun, moon and birdsong--and then emerge ready for tuck-in. Swanson's language is simple and soothing, in large print, making the book appropriate for both bedtime and for reading practice. Beth Krommes's watercolor and scratchboard illustrations are highly detailed with a folk-art aesthetic, rendered in black, white and gold.
