Review:
In 1872 in New York, Horace Carpentine has been raised to believe in science and little else. Apprenticed to Enoch Middleditch, a society photographer, Horace performs chores willingly and is happily absorbed by the science of photography - until the day the Peggm black servant girl of Mrs. Fredrick Von Macht turns up on the doorstep with a morbid request. Mrs. Von Macht wants a portrait of herself, photographed in her home, to hang in her dead daughter's mausoleum. Despite his reservations, Horace complies. Befriended and warned by Pegg, he learns that nothing is as it seems in the strained household. Science, art, ghosts and revenge come together in this age-appropriate suspense filled story.
