SmartMoves - Home Edition
Fall 2008 DVDSometimes, a DVD is just a DVD. Not here. Body Puzzles for the Mind should be on every "required watching" list. It is innovative, intelligent and intriguing. Fascinating, captivating, and utterly absorbing, this simply elegant production of movement and music is devoid of bells and whistles, and loaded with wisdom and clarity. Narration is neither needed, nor present.
Although the user's guide describes the project's firm grounding in neuroscience, a PhD is not required to participate. Viewers - be they in a classroom or a family room - follow along as the puzzle presenters (boys, girls, men and women) recreate patterns on the screen. For example, a yellow X will appear, followed by the image of a woman moving her right arm toward her left shoulder, then her left arm toward her right shoulder, thus creating an X. The more than 40 puzzles are arranged from Simple to Tricky to Challenging.
Working on these puzzles requires focus. Focusing on mastering the movements is calming; it improves attention. And in a world that inundates children with media that it too loud, too fast, and too much, you can't ask for an antidote better than this.
Not to be missed.
