Review:
Founded by Danny Lapidus and Francisco Cotto, Hot Peas 'N Butter fuses elements of traditional Latin music, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, jazz, folk and rock into this fourth and latest collection of original and traditional tunes. "Different Spokes for Different Folk," a wonderful bicycle safety song, a deeply funky version of the African American traditional train song "Jack-a-lacka," the sweet, sleepy song "Beautiful Dream," the traditional Cha Cha tune "Ocho Candelikas" featuring legendary cuatro player Yomo Toro and a reggae rendition of the traditional "Peggy-O" will surprise and delight parents familiar with both the Joan Baez and Grateful Dead versions. Ace guitarist Mike Stern contributes searing guitar on the jazzy stomp of "Hey Mike! (Conversation With A Guitar)" and the roadhouse workout of "Jam House of Blues." "In Belgian Rain" finds Lapidus performing a solo acoustic lullaby before the Latin rhythms and conga drums sweep the album to a delightful close in the celebratory "Glad You Were Here."
