PBS KIDS PLAY!
Fall 2008 Online SoftwareAs we've come to expect from PBS Kids television, games and activities here promote counting, real life mathematical skills (e.g. measuring ingredients), color identification, reading and story creation, likeness/difference, matching, object identification, following directions, sorting by size, scientific knowledge, musical arrangement, creativity and even fairness.
After selecting his or her profile, each player is brought to a home screen where games and activities can be selected. The home screen, designed to look like a cozy room, can be accessorized to suit with a few clicks to customize the scene.
One door allows players to select from a variety of games. Games are selected by clicking on character icons that will suggest games based upon the user's past performance. Parents can view the child's profile and select games based on progress indicators. Parents can also search for games by keyword, activity, or character. And, because this is PBS television, another door takes users to a room from which they can select PBS Kids shows to view.
All activities are age appropriate and based upon national educational standards. Children quickly learn how to navigate the system, and if they appear to be stuck , the host "Dash" offers his assistance. The graphics and audio are top notch. Unfortunately this makes many sections of the site sluggish to load. A few of the icons seem to have audio or video artifacts, which is sometimes confusing.
The ability for parents to monitor progress and help tailor the learning environment is welcome, as is the automatic adjustment of difficulty levels and content suggestions. There are many creative games, but "Guess What!" stood out the most because of its interactive nature. In a style similar to "20 questions", users play "Guess What!" by listening to clues and selecting the correct object. The child also gets a turn to select the object while the Berenstein Bear character guesses.
The content promotes the development of a wide array of skills, and new activities are added weekly. The activities are innovative and interactive; results can be seen and heard and children are engaged and confident as they explore new learning opportunities on the site.
