Green Science - Spinning Top Generator

Green Science - Spinning Top Generator

Fall 2008 Toys

Spinning Top Generator is a science kit that, in a very straightforward way, demonstrates how electrical current is generated. A coil of wire is attached to a base and the wire ends are connected to an LED light on a tower. As a disc with embedded magnets is spun like a top on the base, a sufficient current is generated to cause the LED light to flash.

This toy is an excellent representation of how electricity is generated at large power plants that supply electricity to our homes, and the "green science" message presented is a good one: electricity can be generated by means other than burning fossil fuels. If spinning a top can generate electricity, so can a rotor turned by the wind and so can a turbine turned by moving water.

This simple toy continues to be the focus of a great deal of attention. It sits on the island in our kitchen (the center of activity in our house) and just about every friend, neighbor, relative, or Cub Scout that visits spins the disc to power the light. Be the first on your block to turn your kitchen counter into a lesson in electromagnetic induction.
