Review:
Even if they haven't yet seen Russell Crowe in cinematic combat, boys LOVE gladiators. Our sons were thrilled to receive what they thought was a large picture book on the topic of these violent athletes. But History in Action: ROMAN GLADIATOR is not only a book. The sturdy casing opens and unfolds to become a detailed miniature coliseum, complete with banners, spectators, and a lower level for the stars of the show: the men and animals who will fight before the crowd. Two plastic figures and dozens of press-out cardboard models are the cast for a youngster's recreation of these famous spectacles: chariot races, animal shows, and armed struggle with an array of deadly weapon s. A 24-page paperback book provides the factual background for the play, in some cases correcting misperceptions about the legendary gladiators. Reluctant readers and bookworms alike with be charmed by the hands-on, engaging fun.
