Review:
Childhood bullying remains a large source of concern for parents, children, and educators alike, even at the preschool level. This gentle new picture book, based on the author's own experience of being bullied, encourages young readers to reach out with one simple word to those who look as if they could use a friend. In Say Hello, Jack Foreman has created two dovetailing storylines about being left out, one from the point of view of a stray dog, another from the perspective of a boy. Each of them thinks, "Left out, no fun. Why am I the lonely one?" The book ends happily for all involved-perhaps an oversimplification of the problem, but certainly containing a valuable lesson for this young age group. Foreman's style is simple but effective, and the charcoal and pencil illustrations by Michael Foreman are appealingly childlike. As an added touch, the endpapers say "hello" in 42 different languages. This a sweet and touching book for younger children.
