The 2008 presidential race became instantly historic when, for the first time, an African-American received the nomination of a major party. But this moment in history perhaps would not have happened without the actions of one brave woman back in 1955. Boycott Blues tells the story of Rosa Parks and her monumental decision to keep her seat on an Alabama bus. The incident and Parks's subsequent arrest evolved into the famous Montgomery bus boycott, effectively jump-starting the civil rights movement that made Barack Obama's presidential candidacy possible today. Davis uses clear yet poetic language to bring the realities of a segregated South alive for modern-day children. The hateful Jim Crow laws that prevented blacks and whites from mixing are, for example, embodied in an actual crow character that pecks and strikes "with bony wings." In her juxtaposition of the boycott with blues music, a traditionally black art form, Davis underscores the twin ideas of struggle and hope. Brian Pinkney's ink and clayboard illustrations, rendered in dramatic slashes of black on blue and gold, effectively complement the tone set by the story itself. This is a beautiful and evocative look at where our country has been, and how far we've come.
