Review:
This in-depth and sophisticated science book is brimming with colored pencil and watercolor illustrations that are multidimensional. Teachers always struggle to enliven the study of cells but Macaulay’s view of a cell from within, as opposed to above, is highly original. The Way We Work is as close to an amusement park ride through the human body as a book can get.

Readers will take a virtual tour, past miniature kids tossing paper airplanes into an open airway. They will travel the circulatory system highway and be pumped through the heart. An occasional miniature rider will make smart remarks in cartoon balloons. On a larger scale, a few pages feature an enormous omnipotent hand that is fine-tuning the human body. The scope of the book is wide, and it covers anatomy such as the circulatory, nervous, skeletal, muscular, reproductive, and intestinal systems. Food particles are washed past taste buds and down the throat with saliva, while tiny spectators peer from a nearby balcony, as if viewing Niagara Falls.

The clever illustrations are detailed and action-packed. The end result is a reference book, with a touch of science fiction, that is truly unforgettable. It will be a welcome addition to school and home libraries.
