Martha Speaks

Martha Speaks

Spring 2009 Television
Ages: 4 - 7 yrs.
Network: PBS
Based on the much-loved books by Susan Meddaugh, Martha Speaks, the television show amplifies the premise: Martha the dog eats a bowl of alphabet soup - and is magically transformed into one very conversational canine!

In a world of kid-vid that offers a menagerie of animated talking animal characters, Martha Speaks is a stand-out. Storylines present familiar problems and Martha helps friends come up with realistic solutions grounded in good communication skills. New words are introduced via Martha's impressive vocabulary and then reinforced through well-written dialogue full of context sentences and recognizable synonyms. Episodes end with a recap of those vocabulary words, then Martha directs viewers to the PBS website and the local library to check out more Martha Speaks products.

This show is sure to help build vocabulary skills- but even better, it's an important tool to show them how careful word choice is tied to problem-solving and improved social skills. Martha's one dog who can sweet-talk your kids into learning new [academic] tricks.
