Review:
“We’ll have fun rocking up the place and pretend we’re superstars,” Milkshake’s Lisa Matthews sings in the opening number, “We Got a Band.” The pretending continues in the next song, “Superhero,” which the musicians perform while wearing colorful capes. Upbeat songs with a lot of warmth fill this collection, which include “Rainy Day” (with wonderful animated raindrops), “Imagination Nation” (my eight- year old’s favorite), “Jump” (featuring a middle-school jump-rope team doing precision drills in the background—my five-year old’s fave), and an original song with a familiar name: “Home on the Range.” Many of the tunes include captivating animation, making this DVD a visual treat beyond watching the musicians perform. The lovely “Bluebird” is a song children could learn to sing themselves, and its video imagery is full of wit. “Pirates,” a Celtic-flavored song, begins on a boat-shaped play structure and morphs to the deck of real boat under full sail. DVD “extras” include Matthews’ incomparable narration of “Reading” (about the power of books). This inventive DVD is filled with creative displays and overflowing with fun.
