Review:
On their quest to own the cryptic, "phantom" pony, Paul and Maureen face challenges and disappointments they never could have imagined. As they hear old legends from their wise grandfather, and discover the humanity in animals, Paul and Maureen learn that some things are not meant to be tamed.

Though Paul and Maureen are likeable, and Grandpa an interesting storyteller with an appreciation for nature, humans are secondary characters in Henry's classic story. Nature, consistently personified (the sea is compared to a "wildcat" or "kitten"), acts as both friend and foe to the humans throughout the story. The "phantom" pony seems to act as nature's agent with her exceeding mysteriousness and reluctance to be tamed.

Marguerite Henry's story comes alive via Edward Herrmann's expert narration. Herrmann acts out characters spanning three generations, and vividly portrays Henry's descriptions of animals and nature.
