Review:
Honesty, strength, love, faith—these are the values parents worldwide hope to instill in their children, exemplified in the lovely new picture book Mama Says. Author Rob D. Walker uses twelve pairs of mothers and sons from around the world to demonstrate this very special bond. The gentle, lyrical advice from the mothers to their young boys is geared toward growing them into compassionate men of character. Walker’s global perspective underscores the universal hopes of moms everywhere, while at the same time the inclusion of other languages spotlights specific cultures. For instance, when a mother in South America urges her child to “respect all life and treasure every tree,” we see her words in Quechua alongside the English translation. Leo and Diane Dillon provide cozy, loving illustrations in warm tones that effectively capture each mother’s words of wisdom.
