Review:
In this clear and engaging retelling of the Greek myth, the ancient story tells of the beautiful Persephone, daughter of Demeter, who is kidnapped by Hades, the lord of the Underworld. While Persephone languishes underground, her distraught mother searches the world over for her.

When Demeter learns of her daughter's plight, she blights the earth with a year long winter. Finally, Zeus, forces his brother Hades to give up his kidnapped bride. Hades entices Persephone to eat three pomegranate seeds, thereby ensuring that she will join him for three months every year, as winter returns to earth.

The fine-line, mixed media artwork is exquisite. The clothes, patterns, and hairstyles are those of ancient Greece, and the faces seem inspired by Greek friezes. The palette is somber, befitting the story, except when Persephone is happy. A thoroughly beautiful book.
