We Are the Ship

Fall 2009 Audio Book
Ages: 9 & Up
CD Price: $19.99
Review:
From Rube Foster to Jackie Robinson, Kadir Nelson's We are the Ship recounts the inspiring history of Negro Baseball League formed in 1920. Divided into nine "innings" instead of chapters, the story provides historical context for a time wrought with racial inequity and struggle. At its heart, though, this is the story of young men living out their dreams of playing baseball in the big leagues.

Dion Graham's performance is enjoyable and convincing and his voice is conversational and warm. That said, some dramatic dialogue would add depth to the listeners' experience. The bonus DVD of Kadir Nelson's remarkable illustrations give life, emotion and a place in time to the story.
