Review:
The original producers of Schoolhouse Rock have reunited to create this all-new collection of environmental short subjects. Ten animated segments appear to match the original hand-drawn Schoolhouse, lulling parents into thinking it's the 70's again-until we see a child using a laptop. Each song is performed in a different style, ranging from blues to rap to pseudo-classical to do-wop, each focusing on a different conservation issue. The songs are introduced by animated polar bear hosts, who provide the opening segment, "Report from the North Pole," about melting arctic ice. The songs are "The Little Things We Do," "The Trash Can Band," "You Oughta Be Savin' Water" (my personal favorite-just drop the final "r" from water so "watuh" rhymes with "oughta"), "The Rainforest," "Save the Ocean," (my boys' fave) "FatCat Blue: The Clean Rivers Song," "A Tiny Urban Zoo," "Solar Power to the People," "Windy and the Windmills," "Don't Be a Carbon Sasquatch." Just to show that some things don't change, "The Energy Blues" -one of the original Schoolhouse Rock productions-is included, and it's just as timely as it was when it was made way back when. This DVD doesn't pretend to be a scientific thesis, but the general messages of doing one's best to save the earth's resources is sound. Recommended for teachers and for concerned parents.
