Review:
Walt Disney lived by the motto, If you can dream it, you can do it, and Disney Educational Productions provides this series of DVD classroom aids to explain how science is what turns those dreams into reality. Facts are punctuated by a healthy dose of fun as the host (charismatic Disney Imagineer Asa Kalama) takes viewers on a tour of Disney thrill rides that operate thanks to the physical principle being discussed. In The Science of Disney Imagineering: Designs and Models, the host interviews many fellow Imagineers (i.e. Disney’s job title for their ‘imaginative engineers’) to explain how designs and models are used to put things together and make them function. The main example in this DVD is a thrill ride that shoots through a massive mountain with a Himalayan theme--complete with an animatronics Yeti--and viewers will get a great sense of the collaborative process as Imagineers experiment with scale, proportion, even lighting and sound design, through physical and computer models. Definitions are reinforced throughout with graphics, and the DVD includes an interactive quiz complete with corny cheers if you’re correct and a replay of the scene that reiterates the key concept if you get it wrong. The DVD also includes a "Try it yourself" experiment and a downloadable educator’s guide with additional activities and resources, making this an exceptional investment to augment classroom curriculum. The host often says Imagineers use science to tell stories that take us to exciting places, and The Science of Disney Imagineering: Designs and Models is an excellent example of that claim.
