Review:
"Hey Sid, what do you say? Whatchya wanna learn today?" Each episode of Sid the Science Kid opens with that question, cheerfully delivered in song. And that attitude, light, fun, educational, carries across this latest Sid the Science Kid DVD from the folks at the Jim Henson Company. In the four episodes collected here, the inquisitive Sid, acting as sort of a talk show host, wants to know why his banana is turning brown and mushy, why ice pops melt, what’s causing his shoes to seemingly shrink right there on his feet, and how his grandma manages to make such perfect pancakes. Each episode delves into the respective answers, and the answers are delivered in upbeat, entertaining conversations and songs that find Sid interacting with his young friends, as well as adults--mom, grandma and others--who know a thing or two about how and why. The animation is crisp and colorful, and the dialogue is not too cheesy, as is often the case with productions that dumb down the content for kids. And the lessons are smartly calibrated for the target audience (ages 2-5). In other words, the adults talk with the kids rather than down to the kids, and the scientific information is offered both at home and at school, letting youngsters know that teachers and parents are there for them. Oh, and there are plenty of cute jokes, including this one: When the banana splits, the ice screams.
