Review:
A serious theme - about craftsmanship and the passing on of a craft from one generation to the next - underlies this appealing story of Old Chen, a master paper-lantern maker, he has no one to replace him as his hands grow stiff with age and he must think of closing his shop. When a small boy arrives "filled with curiosity and awe," he asks Old Chen, "Can you teach me to be a lantern maker just like you?" Chen takes him on as an apprentice, and both the boy and the listener/viewer come to appreciate what dedication is involved in the mastery of a craft. A thoughtful child will be enchanted by this worthwhile and satisfying work.
