Review:
Second grader Alvin Ho is afraid of most things. In Book 1, Alvin announces his long list of fears, quickly and comically illustrating his exaggerated personality. Alvin describes himself as "noisy as a firecracker on Chinese New Year." Listeners follow Alvin's hilarious accounts of his self-proclaimed oddness and his tips on how to survive the scariest thing of all, a single day at school, where, despite his incredibly animated and energetic nature, Alvin insists that he is unable to express his quirky traits. In fact, at school, he cannot speak at all. In Book 2, Alvin has to go camping. As one might guess...he's afraid of this too. What will happen in the wilderness with...the darkness, the bears and the dreaded pit toilets? Alvin's character is full of precocious personality and his descriptions are vivid and imaginative.

Reader Everette Plen is pitch perfect, delivering Alvin's struggles as those to which listeners--even those far past the second grade - can easily relate.
