The literary figures of the Harlem Renaissance (Langston Hughes, Rudolph Fisher and Zora Neale Hurston to name a few) are largely familiar to readers today; less well known, however, is Augusta Savage, a sculptor who pursued her love of art despite resistance and disapproval from her minister father. Young Augusta developed her talent for sculpture and even earned a scholarship to attend Cooper Union School in New York City-the first time the school ever supplied a student with full living expenses. The book includes an author's note about where Savage's life headed after her acceptance into art school, as well as photos of the real Savage and some of her sculptures. Illustrator JaeMe Bereal's lively acrylics capture this inspiring story in rich colors evocative of the clay Savage so loved.
