Review:
Naturalist Jim Arnosky's new book is brimming with interesting facts about reptiles. For instance, we learn that the king snake is the only snake that kills and eats rattlesnakes. There is a strong eco-conscious message in Arnosky's work as well. But what really sets Slither and Crawl apart from other children's science books are the illustrations. Arnosky's pencil and acrylic renderings of snakes, lizards and turtles are striking; fold-out pages present life-size images of these creatures-the American crocodile and the leatherback sea turtle definitely leave an impression on readers. However, the text can be challenging and better suited to strong readers than to beginners. For example, Arnosky includes such words as "carapace," "brackish" and "arduous" in his descriptions. This is an excellent choice for wildlife-loving children and for classroom use.
