Review:
Mimi is in for a series of unpleasant surprises. Her father, a famous artist, has offered her the use of his summer cottage in Canada so that she can escape the unwanted attentions of a professor who got a bit too infatuated. However, it's just like her father to forget that he'd already offered the cottage to his son, Mimi's half-brother-and to forget to mention that she had a half-brother. Jay, a musician who's never even met his father, thinks at first that Mimi is the one responsible for breaking into the cottage and leaving all kinds of scary gifts; but the two new-found siblings soon discover that they are being stalked by a surreptitious watcher in the woods. This watcher, as it turns out, is more sympathetic than his behavior might indicate; and he has some legitimate claims of his own to the cottage.

Wynne-Jones's novel packs in all the elements of a page-turning thriller: an isolated country setting, an appealing and vulnerable pair of protagonists, and plenty of scandalous family skeletons. The narration deftly switches back and forth between perspectives, giving the reader plenty of clues to the various secrets while ratcheting up the suspense.
