Review:
The wildlife of the vast boreal forest is shown here in magnificent detail. The winter forest is covered with ice and snow but the summer forest is teaming with lynxes, bears, foxes, moose, and hares. Illustrator Gennady Spirin tempers the harsh environment by adding uniquely soft touches. In his paintings, migrating cranes fly past fluffy clouds, a moose crushes soft ferns, and howling wolves are lightly dusted with snow. The visual contrasts work well and are appropriate in a book about the boreal forest that is either asleep or wide-awake. The author shares the threats against this special northern ecosystem: logging, trapping, mining, and peat harvesting. The end result is a powerful new book about ecology.
