Believing in the teachings of Teshic's golden Empire and knowing himself to be the son of the Warrior Prince Amatec, thirteen-year-old Kehl is entrenched in military training. Although he is an exceptional archer and the best cartographer in the garrison, Kehl fears that he can never live up to the skills of his father and brothers.

Kehl is kidnapped by rebels and made a prisoner aboard a ship at sea. The sea, he has been taught is the "Sea of the Dead." Slowly, Kehl realizes that he is not dead but is a captive of "The Fallen King." Kehl's strict beliefs are shaken by what he observes while living among his enemies, and he is even more disturbed by what he is told.

With a likeable, earnest, understandably confused protagonist, the author tells a cracking good, fast-paced adventure story.
