Review:
Cicada is a blend of literary-quality poetry and short stories, creative non-fiction (i.e., personal essays with a literary flavor) as well as original artwork. The authors are a nice blend of teens and adults, ranging from Newbery recipients like Neil Gaiman to legends like Ray Bradbury to real adolescents with a passion for writing. The subject matter in Cicada doesn't "dumb down" for its teen audience, nor does it shy away from exploring disturbing and thought-provoking issues--for example, foster care or facial disfigurement. The illustrations and photographs are similarly diverse in tone, some humorous and some quite moody. This magazine is recommended for young fans of serious literature, or emerging artists/writers. It also proves as a useful tool for a creative writing class or a model for a school literary magazine.
