Review:
The Speks are a bit of mystery, as far as their real identity goes--particularly as they bill themselves as Ireland's first virtual band for children. The six musicians, whose names are only given as Quince, Naymon, Tommo, Pete, Ed and Rafferty, are based on Glasses Island, where all inhabitants are bespectacled. This collection of sing along songs and nursery rhymes is set to some expertly played Celtic/Irish music and is quite charming, especially for younger children. The majority of the music is traditionally based, and classic nursery rhymes have been adapted to song. Favorites include, "Three Blind Mice," "Old Man Blues" (it's raining, it's pouring and the old man is snoring), "Baby Dish," "The King's Concerto" (sing a song of six pence), "Humpty Dumpty," an exquisite, melodic rendition of "Michael Finnegan," and a version of "Row, Row, Row, your Boat," reinterpreted as "Don't Forget to Scream." All songs are backed with finely played banjo, concertina, whistle, guitar, mandolin and percussion. The Speks all have sweet, gentle voices and the arrangements are both simple and effective.
